The Wellcome Trust is currently accepting proposals for the Collaborative Awards in Science to promote the development of new ideas and speed the pace of discovery.

Wellcome Trust funds teams of researchers, consisting of independent research groups, to work together on the most important scientific problems that can only be solved through collaborative efforts. This often involves collaborations across organisations, national borders, interdisciplinary science and partners outside of academia.

Funding Information

        A Collaborative Award provides funding up to £4 million.

        The duration of funding is usually up to five years.


The support includes:

        Research expenses directly related to their proposal;


        Materials and consumables;



        Access charges;

        Research management and support costs;

        Travel and subsistence;

        Overseas allowances;

        Fieldwork expenses;

        Inflation allowance;

        Publication costs;

        Clinical research costs;

        Other costs.

Eligibility Criteria

        You can apply for a Collaborative Award if you want to work as part of a team to answer an ambitious biomedical research question within the remit that requires a collaborative approach.

        Each applicant in your team must:

        be essential to the proposed collaborative research;

        bring expertise that does not overlap with anyone else in the team;

        have proven research experience in their field and in collaborative research.

        Each applicant should also be leading their own research group.

        Team size will depend on the proposed research, but it has to be more than two people, and usually no more than seven.

        Each applicant should have a permanent, open-ended or long-term rolling contract, or the guarantee of one. Your salary must be paid by your host organisation.

        The lead applicant must be based in the UK, Republic of Ireland, or a low- or middle-income country (apart from India or mainland China). Other applicants can be based in the same or different countries anywhere in the world (apart from mainland China).
